Columbiana’s Transportation Department spent the morning at Joshua Dixon Elementary School going over school bus safety with students.
Bus driver spent some time with all bus riders going over evacuation safety on the school bus. Bus driver, Jodi Bussard also did a safety lesson for all students on how to get on and off the bus safely, and went over other bus rules.
Students then went outside for another safety lesson with Transportation Director, Leslie Best.
Students got on the bus and learned about where the emergency exits are on the bus, and the sounds that go off when the emergency exits are used.
Students also saw first hand the importance of standing ten feet away from a school bus. As part of the safety lesson, one student stood ten feet away from the parked bus, another stood in front of the parked bus. As students got off the bus, they had to tell Best which classmate they could see. Everyone saw the student standing ten feet away from the bus, no one was able to see the student standing in front of the parked bus. Best told students this is why they should always stand ten feet away from a bus, so a school bus driver can see them.
